Practically half of young people under 30 years of age have taken part in a job interview or in a selection process to find a job, 48.6% of young people between 15 and 29 years of age in the Basque Country.
As age increases, more young people say that they have had a job interview or taken part in a selection process for a job: 7.2% of those aged between 15 and 19, 56.8% of those aged between 20 and 24 and 84.6% of those aged between 25 and 29.
On the other hand, there are no differences according to gender: 48.8% of young men and 48.4% of young women have taken part in a selection process to get a job.
18.2% of young people who have taken part in a selection procedure say that they felt discriminated against or believe that they were not selected for the job because they are young.
7.9% of young people who have taken part in a selection process say that they felt discriminated against or believe that they were not selected because of their physical appearance.
And 5.7% of young people who have taken part in a selection process for a job say they have felt discriminated against or think they were not selected for the job because they are male or female, i.e. because of their gender.
Young women have felt discriminated against for any of these reasons to a greater extent than young men, although the most obvious difference is related to discrimination because of their sex; in this case, 8.3% of young women have felt discriminated against in some selection process(es), compared to 3.3% of young men.
People between 25 and 29 years of age, with more experience in selection processes, certainly say that they have felt discriminated against for any of these reasons to a greater extent than people aged 15 to 24. In any case, gender discrimination is the one that shows the greatest differences (8.4% of those aged 25-29 compared to 2.2% of those aged under 25).
In total, 24.5% of young people who have taken part in a selection process for a job say that they have felt discriminated against because of their sex, age or physical appearance.
The percentage of those who say they have felt some kind of discrimination in selection processes is higher in the 25-29 age group and among women.
These data come from a survey that the Basque Youth Observatory carried out in 2020 among a representative sample of young people in the Basque Country aged between 15 and 29, made up of 1,500 people in this age group. The survey was carried out to prepare the "Basque Youth 2020" report, which is currently being drafted, and these data are a preview of it.
