More than half of young people in the Basque Country aged between 15 and 29 believe that our society needs profound reforms (57.8%, to be precise). In addition, another 16.2% believe that our model of society must change radically, while 23.8% think that it can be improved with minor changes. Only 0.9% think that our society is fine as it is.
Compared to previous years, the percentage of young people who believe that our society needs profound reforms has increased, while the percentage of those who think that it is fine as it is has decreased.
Young women call for profound social reforms to a greater extent than young men (61.6 % compared to 54.2 %).
As age increases, so does the number of young people who are in favour of profound social change: among people aged 25 to 29, the percentage of those who believe that profound reforms are necessary rises to 61.0 % and those who think that society must change radically amounts to 20.6 %.
Young people who say they are very or fairly interested in politics also demand profound reforms or radical changes to a greater extent than those who show little or no interest in politics.
These data are a preview of the report "Basque Youth 2020/2021". The Basque Youth Observatory publishes the Basque Youth reports every four years; however, in the 2020 edition, due to the situation generated by the Covid19 pandemic, certain questions were not included and were asked in a subsequent survey in 2021. The report, which is currently being prepared, contains data collected in both the 2020 and 2021 surveys.
