The Basque Youth Observatory presents demographic data from the Municipal Population Statistics of the Basque Statistical Institute (EUSTAT).

On January 1 2022, the population of the Basque Country stood at 2,186,517 people, of which 310,433 were between 15 and 29 years of age and 506,596 were over 64 years of age.

If we relate these two groups, we can see that for every 100 people over 64 years of age in the Basque Country there are currently 61.3 people aged between 15 and 29. The result of this calculation has been falling steadily in recent years, from 71.5 in 2012 to 61.3 today.

The difference in life expectancy between men and women and the resulting unequal proportion in the number of people over 64 by sex (215,969 men compared to 290,627 women) leads to a significant difference in the number of young people compared to those over 64 by sex. While among men this number is 73.8 young men for every 100 men over 64 years of age, among women it is considerably lower, specifically 52.0 young women for every 100 women over 64 years of age.
