In the Basque Country, 13.8% of young people aged 15 to 29 have felt discriminated because of their sexual orientation or gender identity

Every year, since 2004, the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia is celebrated on 17 May. On the occasion of this celebration, the Basque Youth Observatory is presenting some data about discrimination because of gender identity or sexual orientation.

In 2022, 13.8% of 15-29 year olds reported first-hand experience of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

This percentage was slightly higher among young men than among young women (15.2% and 12.2% respectively).

On the other hand, the majority of people who have felt discriminated because of their sexual identity or orientation have also felt discriminated against because of their physical appearance (64.2%), twenty points above the average of all young people who have experienced a situation in which they have felt discriminated against because of their physical appearance (40.0%).

In total, 8.8% of young people in the Basque Country aged between 15 and 29 have experienced first-hand this double situation of discrimination due to their sexual identity or orientation and physical appearance.

“Gender equality” is goal number 5 of the Sustainable Development Goals in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
