In 2023, 1508 women aged between 15 and 29 in the Basque Country reported violence against women according to data from the Department of Security.
On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November, the Basque Youth Observatory presents data provided by Emakunde and the Basque Government's Department of Security.
According to these data, which account for the number of women and the number of complaints of violence against women registered, 5,235 women were victims of male violence in the Basque Country in 2023. Of these, 1,508 were women aged between 15 and 29. After the drop in complaints in 2020 caused by home confinement, the figure has been increasing year by year to reach the current value.
If we move on to analyse the complaints filed by women aged 15 to 29, the most frequent type of violence against women is that perpetrated by a partner or ex-partner. 1011 women aged 15 to 29 reported this type of male violence in 2023.
In 2023, 180 women aged 15-29 years reported domestic violence, excluding violence by intimate partners or ex-partners.
In 2023, 317 women reported a crime against their sexual freedom, and it is the type of violence that has increased the most in percentage terms in recent years.
The rates of women who have reported male violence, calculated per 1,000 women of the same age group, show large differences between the 15-29 age group and women aged 30 and over (9.8 ‰ and 4.4 ‰ respectively).
