28 June, International LGTBIQ+ Pride Day

Every year, on 28 June, the International LGTBIQ+ Pride Day is celebrated. On this day, the Basque Youth Observatory presents the latest data on youth support for same-sex marriage, as well as their position on sex change.

In 2024, 92.1% of young people aged 15-29 in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country were in favour of same-sex marriage. Support was more widespread among young women than among young men (95.0% and 89.3%, respectively) and increased with age, in the case of men (among women it was more uniform in all three age groups).

Most young people also supported sex change (81.6 %). Again, young women (86.1%) were more supportive than young men (77.1%). There were no significant differences by age, although among both women and men, the highest percentages of support were found in the 20-24 age group.

These data come from two surveys that the Basque Youth Observatory carried out in 2024 among people aged 15 to 29 who are members of the GaztePanel. The first was carried out between 15 March and 10 April and involved 2,053 young people. The second survey was carried out between 10 and 23 October and 2,047 young people took part.

Currently, more than 10,000 young people in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country aged 15-34 are members of the GaztePanel and collaborate with the Basque Youth Observatory by giving their opinion through the surveys that the Observatory carries out periodically.

The opinion of young people helps to understand the reality of youth and to implement public policies that favour their situation.
