Trends among Basque Youth

Monographs on quantitative studies (based on telephone surveys, mainly) prepared by the Basque Youth Observatory. The main purpose of the collection is to provide numerical data on current issues based on the different groups being studied.

Summary
: Survey conducted in June 2023 by the Basque Youth Observatory to a representative sample of Basque youth aged 15 to 29. Of the 17 SDGs established by the UN, Basque youth consider 3, health and well-being, 8, decent work and economic growth, and 4, quality education, to be priorities for the Basque Country. Almost half of Basque youth (48.7%) have heard of the SDGs. Spontaneous knowledge is higher among people with higher education (57.3%) and is somewhat higher in Bizkaia (53.0%) than in Gipuzkoa (44.8%) or Alava (42.1%). 


Title: Basque Youth and Social Media (available in Spanish and Basque language)

Summary
: The study analyses which social media are most widely used and with what frequency, the social networks preferred by young people, the main language they use on social media, the activities they usually carry out on the Internet or on social media, how people perceive their use of the Internet, the privacy and security measures they adopt to ensure the protection of personal data and restricted access to their own content, as well as possible advice in this regard from parents, and, finally, we delved into experiences of harassment on social media, an aspect on which an infinite number of articles have been written and which this study attempts to quantify.


Title: Evolución de los hábitos de consumo responsable de la juventud vasca 2010-2013  (Evolution of Responsible Consumption Habits among Basque Youths 2010-2013) (available in Spanish)

Summary
: The research project titled “Evolution of Responsible Consumption Habits among Basque Youths 2010-2013” aims to analyze consumption trends in people aged 15 to 29 and based on how, rather than what or how much they consume. It replicates the research made in 2010, in order to compare the evolution of the consumption trends among Basque Youths.


Title: Juventud y participación social en Euskadi  (Youth and Social Participation in the Basque Country) (available in Spanish)

Summary
: This research analyses three ways to participate in social life: the membership and participation in associations, the voluntary works and the realization of several social actions. Afterwards, these three forms of participation have been combined to elaborate the social participation index. The research is based on data collected by a telephone survey and it has been made by the Basque Youth Observatory with the collaboration of the Basque Country Youth Council.


Title: Emprendimiento joven en Euskadi 2013 (Youth Entrepreneurship in the Basque Country 2013) available in Spanish

Summary
: The new publication of the Basque Youth Observatory, "Youth Entrepreneurship in the Basque Country 2013" provides a comprehensive analysis of the state of entrepreneurship in the Basque Country and its evolution over the last three years. It aims to shed light on the views that young people in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country (ACBC) have regarding entrepreneurship.

Summary
: The seventh issue of the Basque Youth Trends collection includes a topic on Lonjas and youth centres in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country prepared by a team from the Basque Youth Observatory.  


Title: Juventud y consumo responsable en la CAPV (Youth and Responsible Consumption) available in Spanish  

Year of publication: 2013

Summary
: The research project titled 'Youth and Responsible Consumption' was conducted by means of individual telephone surveys of 1,500 people aged 15 to 29 living in the Basque Country and aims to analyse consumption trends in this group of people based on how, rather than what or how much they consume. It also seeks to identify the extent to which young people are aware of the personal, social and environmental implications of consuming a given product or service.  


Title: Creencias y religiosidad de la juventud de la CAPV (Beliefs and religiousness of youths in the Basque Country) available in Spanish

Summary
: According to this study, the percentage of young people living in the Basque Country who state they are Catholic has dropped by more than 20 percentage points in 10 years.


Title: El emprendimiento juvenil en la CAPV (Youth entrepreneurship in the Basque Autonomous Region) available in Spanish

Summary
: The results of a survey conducted by the Basque Youth Observatory that targeted 2,000 young people aged 15 to 34. From the results obtained, we can highlight the following: 12% of the young population of the Basque Country aged 15 to 34 has entrepreneurial experience. Currently 5% of youths are running an active business. This figure is similar to the average in the 27 EU countries. Just over a quarter of young people prefer to set up their own business; the reasons, in most cases, being a desire to be their own boss and independence. When deciding to embark on a business project, Basque youths are mainly concerned about the financial risks involved: going bankrupt and/or losing their property. They also believe there is a lack of financial support.

Summary: The object of this third issue of the series, Basque Youth Trends is to identify the trends and patterns observed in Basque youths.The present research project (pdf, 3 Mb) focuses on the positions held by young people in terms of citizen participation. It then provides detailed information on whatEurope and European Citizenship means to young people and how they see these issues.


Title: Movilidad internacional de la juventud de la CAPV (International youth mobility in the Basque Autonomous Region: information, experiences and projects) available in Spanish

Year of publication: 2011

Summary: From the results obtained, we can highlight the following: Almost 8 out of 10 young people have travelled abroad on some occasion and they have done so mainly for pleasure. One quarter of youths have lived abroad for more than one month. The preferred destinations are the United Kingdom and Ireland, followed by the United States and Canada. The main reasons for visits lasting more than one month are studies, followed by holidays and work. Four in ten young people have planned to go abroad this year, mainly on holiday or to learn languages.

Summary: This report covers the issue of youth mobility: how do they move around; why do they move around, what type of transport do they use, what kind of vehicles do they have at their disposal, what notions do they have of road safety, what opinion do they have of problems deriving from mobility such as pollution or road accidents.


Title: Tendencias de la juventud vasca 2006 (Trends among Basque Youth 2006) available in Spanish (Sólo en formato electrónico)

Year of publication: 2006

Summary: This report constitutes the first issue of the series "Trends among Basque Youth 2006." The basic aim of the research is to raise awareness about the concept of health and an analysis of the behaviour and healthy habits as a whole among youth in Euskadi.
