17th October: International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Publication date:

The Basque Government administers various benefits and grants aimed at preventing the risk of poverty and social exclusion, or to meet the basic needs of individuals and families without sufficient resources. These include the Guaranteed Income Benefit (RGI), Minimum Vital Income (IMV), Social Emergency Aid (AES), and others.

Below are the figures relating to how many young people receive the Guaranteed Income Benefit (RGI), which is a monthly financial assistance for those who either have no income or whose income is insufficient to cover basic needs.

(For more information on the RGI, see: https://www.euskadi.eus/ayuda_subvencion/2016/renta-de-garantia-de-ingresos-rgi/web01-tramite/es/)

In 2023, 2.9% of people aged 18 to 34 were primary recipients of the Guaranteed Income Benefit (RGI), with 3.4% of women and 2.5% of men in this age group receiving it. The trend since 2013 shows that 2022 and 2023 have recorded the lowest percentages of young people receiving the RGI, with women consistently having higher percentages than young men.

When considering not just the primary recipients, but all individuals aged 15 to 34 living in households where at least one member receives the RGI, the figure rises to 5.8% in 2023. The percentage of people aged 15 to 34 living in households where RGI is collected has decreased from 2018 to 2023.

These and other statistics on young people and poverty can be found in the online database (leiho berri batean irekitzen da)of the Basque Youth Observatory’s website, specifically in the section called “Employment and Economic Situation” and, within it, the subsection “Poverty and Risk of Social Exclusion.” Ending poverty is the first of the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations for 2030.
