Practically all Basque youth aged 15 to 29 years say they use social networks in their daily lives. And 29.3% of these young people say in 2023 that, on some occasion, they have felt harassed on social networks by someone who sent them messages continuously, made unpleasant comments, insulted them or threatened them, among other things. Young women report having experienced cyberbullying to a greater extent than young men: 36.3% of women compared to 22.6% of young men.
This greater experience of harassment on social networks by young women is repeated in the various measurements that the Basque Youth Observatory has carried out in recent years. In addition, the percentage of young women and men who say they have experienced some situation of harassment on social networks has increased compared to 2018.
In addition, in 2023, young people were asked if in any case the harassment suffered on social networks was of a sexual nature. 65.5% of women who have experienced some episode of harassment on social networks say that in some case it has been sexual harassment; in the case of men the percentage is not so high, 32.8%.
This means that, for the total of Basque youth aged 15 to 29 years, 23.8% of women and 7.4% of men have ever suffered sexual harassment on social networks.
In 2024, the Basque Youth Observatory has prepared two reading guides with reference material on this topic:
