Publication date:

The employment rate of Basque youth aged 16 to 29 in the fourth quarter of 2023 is the highest in recent years and stands at 44.5%. The employment rate indicates the percentage of employed people with respect to the total number of people in the same age group.

If we analyze the evolution of the employment rate of youth under 30 years of age from 2019 until now, we see that, in the second and third quarter of 2020, as an effect of the Covid19 pandemic, the employment rate experienced a considerable decline and subsequently began to recover gradually. In the last quarter of 2023 it has reached the highest value in the last five years.

This is not something new, throughout 2022 and 2023 we have been seeing that young men had higher employment rates than young women, but in this last quarter of 2023 it has been registered the smallest difference between the two rates (1.7 percentage points).

The data are directly linked to goal 8 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals: "Decent work and economic growth" and, more specifically, to target 8.5: “By 2030, achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value”.
